The Tesla Roadster "flying car" moment, and why it became a meme

What happened

The next-generation Roadster was first shown in November 2017, and CNBC reports Tesla has missed every delivery date it has targeted since it began taking deposits. That history is part of why this demo got so much attention.

On October 15, 2026, Tesla showed its next-generation Roadster in a livestream from a SpaceX test site in McGregor, Texas. The event had been moved from October 1, with Tesla citing severe weather.

In the demo, a white prototype raced up a curved ramp, flipped in mid-air and landed using cold-gas thrusters. Tesla's timer showed 0 to 60 mph in under a second.

What it is, and what it isn't

Tesla's own page says the flying version is an "Invite Only" configuration with one seat, and that it is not approved for public road use. Elon Musk said production is planned for 2028. No price was announced.

So "flying car" is a fair description of the demo and a poor description of something you can buy. We could not confirm independent testing of the acceleration claim, a price, or whether the flying version can ever be street legal. Treat those as open. The Verge's view is that the demo was a stunt, not a product, and we think that is the useful way to read it.

Why people are making meme videos

News outlets report jokes about Bollywood car flips, traffic jams in the sky, toll booths and parking. Our read: the clip is short, instantly recognizable and easy to put into a familiar scene, which is what a good meme needs.

That also suits AI video. You do not need the original footage, only a clear idea and a few short clips.

Our playbook walks through the steps, tools and costs for turning a trending moment into a short AI meme video. Start with the confirmed facts above, pick one joke, and keep the video short.
