Make Episode 1 of an animated AI series with Grok Imagine
- You have an idea for a short animated or cinematic series and want a 60-90 second first episode for Shorts/Reels or YouTube. The worked approach follows the official Grok Imagine account's own guides: its character-design guide (Oct 22, 2026) and the production tips it shared from its Odyssey pilot (Sept 29, 2026), whose Episode 1 it released on Oct 23, 2026.
- Grok Imagine can be used in the Grok app (grok.com/imagine) or through the xAI API. In the app, xAI's pricing page lists Imagine on Plus and 'Make stunning AI images & videos' on Premium ($30/month); xAI doesn't publish how many images or clips a plan's usage pool covers (x.ai/pricing, checked Oct 24, 2026).
- About an evening for a 60-second episode of 8-12 shots, plus an editor you already use. No editing software is priced here.
1. Workflow
-
Plan the series and write a beat sheet for Episode 1: a one-sentence logline, a look-and-feel brief, 1-3 main characters with one signature item each, up to 3 locations, and 6-10 beats with rough timings.
- Tool
- Grok (Claude or ChatGPT also fine)
- Why
- Every later prompt reuses this brief, and a short cast and few locations are what keep an AI series consistent and affordable.
- Cost
- $0 on Free plans.
Paste into any chatbot. Have your idea and any reference images or doodles handy.
Preview prompt: Series plan and Episode 1 beat sheet
-
Lock the style and design your characters: put your inspiration (a photo, a doodle, images you like) into a new canvas in Grok Imagine, brainstorm the style with Grok, then ask for first character designs and refine one detail at a time (costume, colors) until you have a design you love.
- Tool
- Grok Imagine (canvas and images)
- Why
- The official Grok Imagine character guide gives these steps: collect inspiration in a new canvas, brainstorm the style with the agent, ask for first character designs and refine specific details (posted Oct 22, 2026, checked Oct 24, 2026).
- Cost
- In the Grok app, xAI's pricing page lists Imagine from Plus ($8/month); via the xAI API, images start at $0.02 each.
Paste into the Grok chat inside your Grok Imagine canvas (or any chatbot), with the brief from Step 1.
Preview prompt: Style lock and character design brief
-
Make your reference pack: use each approved character design as the source image for a turnaround sheet (front, profile, 3/4 and back), then for props, vehicles and your locations in the same style. Save each with a clear name.
- Tool
- Grok Imagine (images)
- Why
- The same official guide suggests using your character design as a 'source' image for other characters, props, vehicles and backgrounds, and making a turnaround image (Oct 22, 2026). xAI's API docs say grok-imagine-video-1.5 takes up to 14 reference images per clip for characters, products and locations (checked Oct 24, 2026).
- Cost
- Via the xAI API, images start at $0.02 each; in the app, included in your plan's usage pool.
-
Turn the beat sheet into a numbered shot list: for each shot, which references to attach, a first-frame line, an exact motion line ('enters left, exits right'), one camera move, the sound or spoken line, and a length of 15 seconds or less.
- Tool
- Grok (Claude or ChatGPT also fine)
- Why
- Grok Imagine clips run 1-15 seconds (xAI docs, checked Oct 24, 2026), so an episode is a chain of short shots. The official Odyssey tips say that when a shot drifts, more words rarely fix it: spell out exactly how things move (Sept 29, 2026).
- Cost
- $0 on Free plans.
Paste into any chatbot, with your Step 1 beat sheet, Step 2 locks and the names of your Step 3 reference images.
Preview prompt: Shot list with reference, motion and sound lines
-
Generate each shot: attach its references (in the app, lock your image as a Reference), paste the first-frame, motion, camera and sound lines, make 2 takes, and keep the best. Use Speed Mode for lots of cinematic drafts and Quality Mode for cleaner shots; fix small details like clothing, hair or props with segmentation instead of re-rolling.
- Tool
- Grok Imagine (video)
- Why
- The official Odyssey tips say locking an image as a Reference unlocks Grok Imagine's Omni video model so characters respond better to prompts, Speed Mode suits cinematic volume while Quality Mode is cleaner, and segmentation edits elements like clothing, hair and props precisely (Sept 29, 2026). xAI's docs say Grok Imagine video includes generated audio, and grok-imagine-video-1.5 makes lip-synced speech (checked Oct 24, 2026).
- Cost
- In the Grok app, video generation is on Premium ($30/month); via the xAI API, grok-imagine-video-1.5 is $0.08/second at 480p and $0.14/second at 720p.
-
Add a theme: keep the dialogue and sound effects from your clips, and if you want a recurring series theme, make a short instrumental in Suno that you reuse at the start or end of every episode.
- Tool
- Suno (optional)
- Why
- A reused theme makes episodes feel like one show. Suno's pricing page lists commercial use rights for songs made while subscribed on paid plans (checked Oct 24, 2026).
- Cost
- Optional. Suno Free $0; Pro about $10 billed monthly.
-
Edit the shots in order, add the theme and captions, watch it once with the sound off, then write the title, hook, caption, hashtags and AI label and post it.
- Tool
- A video editor, then Grok (Claude or ChatGPT also fine) for the post copy
- Why
- Stitching and captions happen outside the generators, and an honest AI label tells viewers it isn't real footage.
- Cost
- Editor cost not sourced; chatbot $0 on Free plans.
Paste into any chatbot, with your logline, beat sheet and final length.

Step 5 shots: grok-imagine-video-1.5 reference-to-video at 480p, 10 shots × 2 takes × 6 s: $9.60
Our arithmetic: 10 shots × 2 takes × 6 s = 120 s × $0.08/s = $9.60 (our arithmetic)
Reference images need grok-imagine-video-1.5 (not 1.5 Lite). xAI lists $0.08/s at 480p, $0.14/s at 720p and $0.25/s at 1080p; reference-to-video output is up to 720p per xAI's video overview.

6. Caveats and assumptions
- Grok Imagine's in-app features in Steps 2-5 (canvas, Reference lock, Speed and Quality Modes, segmentation) come from the official Grok Imagine account's posts, not from a help-center page; names and menus may change.
- The API costs are our arithmetic at xAI's listed per-second rates for a 60-second, 10-shot episode with 2 takes each. Retakes, longer shots or 720p output cost more; xAI shows the rate per model and resolution on its Models page.
- xAI doesn't publish how many images or clips a Plus or Premium plan's usage pool covers, so the in-app route may need top-ups for a long episode.
- Even with references, faces, outfits and props can drift between shots. Check every shot against your character lock before you keep it.
- Don't use real people's faces, voices, or copyrighted characters without permission, and label the episode as AI-generated.
