Spotify took 50 million AI slop and spam tracks out of recommendations. What it means if you make music with AI

What Spotify announced

On Oct 20, 2026, Spotify said it has taken more than 50 million AI-generated slop and spam tracks out of recommendations this year. That is on top of more than 75 million spammy tracks it removed from the platform for serious or repeated rule violations. The 50 million were pulled from recommendations; reporting on the announcement says they were not necessarily deleted from the catalog.

Spotify says no single signal catches slop, so it combines listener engagement and feedback, upload patterns, metadata and several third-party AI detection tools. It says AI detection has limits and will get harder. It also names the tactics it looks for: mass uploads, duplicates, SEO manipulation, spammy playlist networks and artificially short tracks. Since the changes, it reports a marked drop in listener complaints.

The tools it points artists to

AI Credits, launched in April, let artists disclose which roles and instruments were made with AI; listeners see them in Song Credits on mobile. Artist identities Spotify believes are AI-generated get an AI Persona badge and are left out of editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default, unless a listener follows them. Artist Profile Protection, which lets artists review releases that list them, is due for all artists by the end of the year. And the 1,000-stream royalty threshold stays: Spotify says likely-AI tracks are 10 times more likely to fall below it.

If you make songs with Suno or other AI tools

Our reading, not Spotify's rules: the patterns it targets are volume patterns. Releasing fewer, finished songs, skipping near-duplicates and very short tracks, and filling in AI Credits honestly all point the other way. Building listeners off-platform helps too, and a real music video is one way to do it; our new playbook walks through one with a consistent AI singer. If you post that video on YouTube, its help center says AI music that is the main focus of a video must be disclosed with the AI use setting.

What we couldn't confirm

Spotify doesn't define where AI-assisted music ends and slop begins, or say whether disclosing AI Credits affects recommendations either way. It also doesn't say whether a human artist who performs through an AI-generated avatar would get an AI Persona badge. We'll update this post if Spotify publishes more detail.
