What is the difference between Claude Code and Cowork?
Both are Claude agents that plan and carry out multi-step work. Anthropic's Cowork page (checked Oct 21, 2026) says Claude Code "is built for software engineering — writing, debugging, and shipping code," while Cowork "is built for non-coding knowledge work — research, analysis, document creation, and other multi-step tasks." Claude Code works in a repository with git, CLAUDE.md, hooks and skills; Cowork works across your files and connected tools and hands back finished documents.

Is Cowork part of regular Claude now?
Yes, as it rolls out. Anthropic's help pages say "Claude Cowork is now just Claude": you ask for what you need, and Claude decides whether that's a quick answer or a task. It's rolling out gradually to Pro and Max, and it's in beta on Enterprise, where an admin turns it on. Anthropic announced the change on Sep 16, 2026 and said Team and Free plans will follow. If your message box no longer shows "Chat" and "Cowork" options, you have the new experience (checked Oct 21, 2026).

Does Cowork run on my computer or in the cloud?
In the cloud, on Pro and Max. Anthropic says that since Oct 6, 2026, new Cowork tasks on those plans run in the cloud on every surface, with no setting to choose where a task runs; tasks you started on your computer before Oct 6 stay there until they're done. Local files, your browser and computer use still go through the Claude Desktop app while it's open. For new tasks that run only on your computer, Anthropic points you to Claude Code in the desktop app (checked Oct 21, 2026).

Do I need to know how to code to use Cowork?
No. Anthropic says Cowork uses the same agentic architecture as Claude Code "with no terminal required." You describe an outcome in the Claude app, review Claude's plan and let it run. Claude Code also has a desktop app and a web version, but its job is still to change code in a repository, and you review the diffs (checked Oct 21, 2026).

Can Cowork write code, and can Claude Code edit documents?
There's overlap. Anthropic says Cowork runs code and shell commands in an isolated environment on its servers to finish tasks, and produces Excel files with working formulas, PowerPoint decks and formatted documents. Claude Code can edit any file in a repo. Our rule of thumb: if "done" means a diff and passing tests, use Claude Code; if it means a finished file, use Cowork.

Which one can run tasks on a schedule?
Both. In Cowork, type /schedule in a task or open Scheduled in the sidebar; Anthropic says scheduled tasks run in the cloud with no device online. Claude Code has cloud scheduled tasks (formerly routines) that keep running when your computer is off, desktop scheduled tasks that use your local files, and /loop to repeat a prompt inside a CLI session (checked Oct 21, 2026).

Which one is safer to leave running?
They use different controls. Cowork has three modes: Manual asks before actions, Auto has Claude safety-check each action and block risky ones, and Skip checks nothing (the merged experience offers Auto and Manual). Claude Code's sandbox is off by default; turn it on with /sandbox. On native Windows, Claude Code runs commands unsandboxed, so Anthropic points you to WSL2.

Does Cowork use more of my usage limit than chat?
Usually, for multi-step work. Anthropic says tasks that run code, create files or use connected apps use more than a quick question, and that Auto mode "consumes more of your usage limit than the other modes." Its tips: group related work into one task, start a new conversation for unrelated work, and check Settings > Usage. Claude Code draws from the same plan pool.

Only if you work on code in a repository. Cowork can run code to finish a task, but Claude Code is built for codebases: git, CLAUDE.md, hooks, CI and reviewing diffs.
Can Cowork make Excel files with formulas?
Yes. Anthropic says Cowork generates Excel files with working formulas such as VLOOKUP, conditional formatting and multiple tabs, plus PowerPoint decks and formatted documents (checked Oct 21, 2026).
Can Cowork run when my computer is off?
Yes. On Pro and Max, new Cowork tasks have run in the cloud since Oct 6, 2026, and Anthropic says scheduled tasks run with no device online. Tasks that use local files, your browser or your computer need the Claude Desktop app open.
Is Cowork the same as Claude chat now?
It's becoming that. Anthropic says "Claude Cowork is now just Claude," rolling out gradually to Pro and Max and in beta on Enterprise. If your message box no longer shows "Chat" and "Cowork" options, you have the new experience.
Which one is safer for my files?
Cowork asks before permanently deleting files and runs code in an isolated environment on Anthropic's servers. Claude Code's sandbox is off by default; turn it on with /sandbox, and commit to git so you can revert.
